It’s not like this one has snuck up on us, Kyle Dubas is cornered and likely fighting to keep his job as he tries to manage cap space, while resisting not to make any major roster changes.
Problem is that we have no cap space, so the big question is whether the Maple Leafs will sign or trade Morgan Rielly.. and it’s ugly
Morgan is signed through 2021-2022 for $5 million this season, the problem is that NHL defensemen are getting massive deals, most recently Darnell Nurse, Cale Makar, and Seth Jones with long-term contracts paying over $8 million per year.
As we saw with losing Zach Hyman, we now face the same challenge with Morgan Rielly as he’s looking to make the same sort of money — and the Leafs don’t have it

Scenarios: Maple Leafs Sign Or Trade Morgan Rielly?
The Leafs have to make a decision, largely influenced that if the Maple Leafs don’t go (deeper) in the playoffs this year, MLSE will likely make some major changes and finally replace Shanahan and Dubas.
Do they move one of the big three – Matthews, Marner, or Nylander to make cap space for Rielly?
Or do the Leafs do nothing, make another run at the Stanley Cup and risk losing Rielly at the end of the season?
You could also make the case to outright trade Rielly, but I don’t see that happening unless the Leafs aren’t in playoff contention and surrender him in a deadline move.
Morgan Rielly is one of the most popular Leafs and probably our best defenseman, this is likely not going to turn out well no matter what direction Dubas takes and Leafs Nation isn’t going to be happy about it.
